1. Mario Kart 64
No game in the world has the fanbase that super Mario has. The kids of the 90’s growing up playing super Mario and they are the adults of now. Following the success of the original series, lots of different versions of the Italian plumber came up and Mario Kart 64 is one such game. It tops our list of the best Nintendo 64 racing games and rightly so. It was released on December 1996 and has till 2014 sold more than 9.87 million copies and is ranked as the second best-selling N64 game.
It was one of the early games to have 3D computer graphics and had multiplayer support. It is a kart racing game and has four different modes of gameplay: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, and Battle.
2. Diddy Kong Racing
Diddy Kong Racing is second on our list of best racing games for n64. Diddy Kong is actually a character from another game series franchise, the famous Donkey Kong series originally created by Nintendo. It was first released in 1997 as a racing game for the Nintendo 64 and is the eighth best-selling game for the n64 selling just over 4.8 million copies. An advanced newer release happened in 2007 named as Diddy Kong Racing DS.
The gameplay has eight different characters from the Donkey kong universe and has three different vehicles: Car, Aeroplane, and Hovercraft. It has three modes of gameplay: Normal, Adventure and Adventure 2.
3. EXCITEBIKE 64
One of the best n64 racing games, Excitebike 64 was among the first games to have dirt bike racing. It was the second game in the Excite series and was released in the year of 2000. The game showcased real life like physics and delivered an excellent gameplay considering the time when it was released.
It has 6 different characters of unique skill sets and has 20 different tracks to ride on.
It has sold more than two million copies worldwide and continues to have a place in the minds of old n64 users.
4. Wave Race 64
Created by Nintendo as a racing game for Nintendo 64, Wave Race 64 is my personal favorite on this list. It is a sequel to the older Wave race and is much of an improvement graphics wise and gameplay wise. Launched in 1996, wave race 64 is a racing game where players race on Jet skis on water courses. It was received well owing to the complex graphics that it offered and performed quite well on sales. Because of its popularity, IGN ranked this as 33rd in their 2003 list of Top 100 Games of All Time.
It has four modes: Championship, Warm-up, Time Trials, Stunt Mode, and a multiplayer mode to play with your friends. The gameplay is well thought of and keeps one occupied. The graphics on the game were the high class of its time. There are a total of 4 characters to play as. Its predecessor, Wave Race: Blue Storm, was released in 2001, to be played on the Nintendo GameCube.
