Owning and using a Kindle is, undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get your hands on an e-book. The Kindle Paperwhite 2 has always been among the favorites of readers due to its simple yet elegant design and easy-to-use features.

paperwhite 2 vs 3The latest generation of Kindle Paperwhite, i.e., Kindle Paperwhite 3 has come in with better features and has improved the standard of reading e-books several notches higher. Although it is not completely different from the previous generation, it does have some undeniable advantages.

Kindle Paperwhite 2 vs 3

On digging deep enough, we have brought to light a few apparent differences between the Kindle Paperwhites 2 and 3. Let’s have a look at them and decide which one is better and why.

Difference in Resolution:

Although one may not find a lot of differences in the resolution on the Kindle Paperwhite 3 from 2 at first glance, there definitely are some. Both generations have resolutions 1440 x 1080p. The Kindle Paperwhite 2 has 212 PPI which means that the new Kindle is highly advanced in this front as it comes with 300 pixels per inch or PPI. This means that KP 3 has a better resolution when one zooms into the screen.

This change, big as it is, is not quite apparent on the surface and can only be distinguished by regular users.

The physical body:

The Kindle Paperwhite 3 comes with a fine and subtle grip sandpaper finish which is pretty pleasing to place on the palm. On the other hand, the Kindle Paperwhite 2 has a soft and smooth rubber grip.

Secondly, the Amazon logo is quite apparent on the latter and not so in the new generation of Kindle Paperwhite. Whereas the Kindle logo is visible on the Kindle Paperwhite 3, written in white, it is not so much on the Kindle Paperwhite 2 on which it is written in black with a piano finish.

Kindle Active Content:

Kindle Paperwhite 3 happens to be the only Kindle which does not support Kindle Active Content in any way. This is because, the games and apps designed for Kindle via Kindle Active Content proved to be a flop, so Amazon decided to drop this idea for newer generation Kindles.

So, if you are expecting Kindle Active Content on Kindle Paperwhite 3, stick with your older generation Kindle, because Kindle Paperwhite 2 was the last of its kind to sport this feature.

Formatting changes:

Since the Kindle Paperwhite 3 has better resolution than the previous one, it has thinner and more stylish fonts compared to the e-book reading devices with lower resolutions. Having said that, one does not have to necessarily stick to the Amazon fonts but can customize these fonts accordingly.

The front light of Kindle Paperwhite 3, however, is on the same level as that of Kindle Paperwhite 2. So, if you are looking to upgrade for the sake of an improved backlight, you are going to be surprised, but not pleasantly.

CONCLUSION:

The Kindle Paperwhite 3 may not the best generation of Kindle Paperwhites and e-books, but it is certainly better than the Paperwhite 2. Its high resolution and enhanced features make it one of the ideal choices if you are looking to upgrade your Kindle but don’t wish to opt for a drastically different one.

Also, its outer body is way better than the previous generation of Kindle and is a boon to hold and use. Having given all these advantages, it can be rightly said that the Kindle Paperwhite 3 is not only good but the best option to consider in replacement of the Paperwhite 2.
